This is an HDila set that is essentially a LCD (actually closer to LCoS like what Sony would use) rear projection HDTV. It has a problem that occurs over time where the lamp heat starts to damage the internal lenses, polarized plates, LCD panels, etc and the picture grows darker and discoloration (especially on the edges at first). This is repaired by changing the optical engine. On top of this engine is a "DD" (direct drive) circuit board, that is sold separately from the engine. The settings in this board is aligned by the factory to match the engine and is done at the factory. When this board is changed you must first hook this to your computer via a test jig and down load the data. Then when the new board is installed the data is reinstated so the new board matches the engine.
It sounds like you now may have a bad engine and mis-adjusted DD board.
You mentioned the picture wouldn't fill the screen, this could be the aspect ratio (button on the remote changes this) and many times it's actually the signal source (cable company) has added black margines to the picture so the only way to eliminate this is to zoom in.
