I Have A Question About Legitimacy Of Part Of Boa Hiring Process

For a BOA technical position, after answering all of the recruiter's technical questions, relative to the BOA tech job, she asked me, over the phone, to give my complete ssn. She said this was necessary to secure a BOA interview at their site. I asked if I could provide the information to the BOA HR dept because I don't like giving me SSN over the phone to a thrird party. The recruiter said BOA hiring policy requires I submit my ssn to a third party member. In my opinion, BOA interview policy requiring a person to give his SSN over the phone to a thrird party member has got to be eliminated - this is very sensitive information. I think, instead, the candidate should be granted the interview PROVIDING he agrees with the recruiter, to supply his SSN directly to a BOA HR official. Note well, when I asked the recruiter if giving an SSN over the phone to a third party is wise, she replied it was the only way I could secure an interview with BOA. I can't believe BOA security over disemination of one's SSN over the phone to a third party member is supported by this bank as a part of their hiring policy. The consulting firm is Axelon Services. My wife worked at Washington Mutual which got bought by Bank of America as a Sys Admin. There is no such requirement.

They approached me with this as well and i scoffed because I knew this and I never give out this information unless required for background checks or tax and legal documentation; even when medical and insurance forms ask for it, it is usually because their systems were built badly to use this as a unique personal identifier in their systems and you can use a fake one if you are worried and it won't affect anything (just make sure that you can remember it).

I have had Axelon job spam me and when I called up a rep to talk to them, they instantly recognized me as the person who would not give them a SSN and said they couldn't help me if I wouldnt give them a SSN and hung up on me.

The short answer though is no, BOA does NOT need this and AXELON is acting FRAUDULENTLY IMHO. Do NOT give them this information and avoid them like the plague.
