I can think of three ways to accomplish this:

Assuming you have a high-end phone, like an iphone/android/etc., you can install the specialized facebook application that handles these tasks for you over your mobile broadband connection
You can access their mobile interface if your phone is not quite that high-end.
You can subscribe to SMS updates. This should work for most phones and will also be the easiest on your phone's battery.
