1996 Ford Bronco: Automatic Shifter Will Not Positively Seat In The Park Positio
The automatic transmission shifter arm on my 1996 Ford Bronco XLT, VIN 1FMEU15H5TLA59557, will not positively position itself in the Park position. It is lose all through the selection positions (R, N, D, 2, 1). While loose the shifter will take position in all selections, allowing the truck to run, drive and shift correctly. Most "loose shifter questions" get answered by directing the repair to two loose or missing screws located towards the bottom of the steering column. My two screws are there, tight and seem "factory". By not firmly seating in the park position the truck has rolled unexpectedly, and of course sometimes won’t allow the key to be removed, but the most common symptom is pour starting. Sometimes there is simply no start (no connection, no try, no dash lights, no turning over, no systems are even turned on) and other times it acts as if the battery is low (all systems are turned on but it’s a sluggish turnover). In every single case of no or pour starting, by positively pushing or re-position the automatic shifter into park, the truck starts perfectly. System's checks indicate no problems in the electrical system. The solution could very well be adjusting those two screws, but it does seem to fit my symptoms. Most of those "loose shifter question" seem to indicate clear shifting problems throughout the choice range, including miss alignments in the selections. I have been on the verge of purchasing a rebuilt steering column, but the more I read I don’t think that’s the solution either. The steering wheel, steering, alignment, and tires all track perfect. My question is: There is something loose, missing, or broken, which is not allowing the shifter arms to travel, move and stay seated … Any suggestions, diagrams, part names, or ideas as to what I can replace or tighten? Most parts catalogs identify lots of part for in and around the column, but I don’t want a bag of parts that don’t correlate.

If you are sure the cable arm at the end of the shift tube is tight, then look at the shift tube bushings. they are plastic bushings on top of your steering column that the shift tube ride in. You should also check the transmission range sensor. This component prevents the vehicle from starting in reverse or drive.
