the teeth on the key are fine and the key does come out sometimes but the button on the shifter is very loose and won't lock anymore. Could it be the cable that goes from the shifter to the key lock in the steering column?

the key is stuck in the ign, proble becsause the teeth are broken and not letting the cylinder rotate properly.  as for the going into gear it might also be the same problem because when you turn the key it alows for the car to be shifted into gear.
