The check engine light comes on when the sensors in your car pick up something that isn't normal. The five most common reasons for a check engine light to come on are as follows.

1. Their is a faulty spark plug. Check your spark plugs for any signs of damage, and replace the ones that are damaged.

2. The gas cap is loose. Tighten the gas cap when the car is off, then crank it back up to see if the check engine light goes off.

3. The fuel injector is clogged. If this is the case, you'll notice that it takes longer for the car to increase speed when you push down on the accelerator. You should get your fuel system flushed regularly to prevent this from happening.

4. The O2 sensor is faulty. If this is the case you will notice a decrease in gas mileage, and find it hard for the car to pick up speed.

5. The exhaust  gas recirculation valve is dirty. If this is the case you will notice a strong smell of gas when you crank up the gas.

If none of this helps take it to a mechanic and ask them to run a diagnostic test on it, and they will find the problem.
