Reduced Engine Power

After running out of gas, the Reduced Engine Power indicator symbol lit up on the dashboard. I thought this would turn off when I got gas in the car, but it is still lit,the engine runs rough, car is sluggish, and the gas mileage is horrible. Car is at the dealer for service of this problem, but they don't seem to know what to do, and I will be without my car for two days!
