Why Does The Goodwill Remove All Of The Jewelry Donations With Gold Or Silver?

Is this normal practice these days? I used to get some nice bargains at the Goodwill, now everything seems retail priced and all of the nice jewelry etc. is no longer available.

Goodwill has become much more of a retail store as of late. They've even opened a dedicated electronics store. My guess is that they melt the gold and silver jewelery and sell it for market price to dealers.

As an employee, I can assure everyone that Goodwill does NOT melt any jewelry down. There are employees who check ALL of the jewelry and decide which pieces get sent to the E-commerce web site ShopGoodwill.com for auction. Their choices are made based on many different criteria, not just whether it's gold or silver. Rare, antique, quality, demand, popularity, etc. are some of the considerations. If the pieces don't sell online, they are removed from the auction and sent back to the retail stores to be displayed for sale. Some stores will put the jewelry in jars, vases, etc. once it has run it's full course and not sold. They average the amount and value of the contents and price the entire thing to put back out for sale. Sometimes people find hidden treasures that were missed before the jars were made.
