The overheating could most likely be fluff and dust build up in the filter, between the filter and fan. I have seen wads 10mm thick in this little space between them.

If you are out of warranty, it seems you may have little luck with hp themselves. If you have a small pc repair shop close by,as it involes stripping right down. but I don't know what they would charge. You can try using a can of compressed air, and this often shifts a lot, but if it has become a wad of fluf, it might not shift it- worth a try. I have done this with a hoover, but you can damage the fan if too much suction spins it too fast, so if even considering that, don't allow too much suction (using your hand to only allow a portion of the power to act on the laptop (not shutting off the part just redirecting away from the laptop)All at your own risk- although I can do these things, and have no problem, damage can be caused with the hoover)

Ifyou have no other option, (monet, or, no one near you0 and want to look yourself- at your own risk, I would then preferably use an antistaic wrist band before going inside the laptop, or, a pair of latex gloves , and then remove the charger, and battery,

In the manual you can swat up about it- it means stripping everything out to get to the fan on this model, unfortunately Look on page 99 to see where it lays (underneath the motherboard, which has to be removed to get to it.)
