Park your RV on a level surface for easiest hookup. Pull your tow car in  behind your RV, leaving a few feet of space in between. Set the parking brake  and leave the vehicle in  gear for now.

  • 2

Attach the tow bar to connect the RV to the tow car. Instructions on  connecting the tow bar will vary between manufacturers and styles, so follow the  product directions. The tow bar uses pins or clips to attach. Make sure that  these are secure. Check the adjustment on the coupler if you have a coupler  style tow bar.

  • 3

Connect the safety  cables or the safety chains. These attach from the tow vehicle to the RV hitch.   The cables should be long enough to easily reach the hitch without dragging on  the ground. If your cables are too long, remove some of the slack by winding the  cable around the tow bar.

  • 4

Plug the electrical umbilical cord from the tow car into the RV hitch by  aligning the pins on the male side to correspond with the holes on the female  side. This connection should be tight.

  • 5

Prepare your tow car according to your owner's manual. The steps for getting  your tow ready vary by car model and features, but their goal is to ready the  vehicle so that it can roll freely down the road behind your RV. Typically, the  transmission is shifted into neutral. If the tow car is four-wheeldrive, then  the transfer case must also be placed in neutral.   The owner's manual will also  describe what position to leave the key on in the steering column so that the  steering wheel does not lock up.  Stow any items left in the vehicle carefully  and lock the doors.

  • 6

Latch the tow bar legs. While this step can vary between different products,  often the RV is pulled forward slightly until the legs are  locked.

  • 7

Verify that the running lights, brake lights and turn signals operate in  unison on the tow car and the RV.

  • Read info starting on page 180 of the manual.
