What tends to happen is when the car gets jacked up the pressure from the weight of the car is relieved from the air bags and air struts and since the system is still on the sensor reads the low pressure and kicks the pump on. When the car is lowered the increase in pressure from the returning vehicle weight blows one or more seal in the pump and/or bags.
You can put soapy water in a spray bottle and check the suspension easy enough. And listening to how often and for how long the compressor runs will let you know if its a leak or a sensor that got damaged(unlikely) If the compressor is doing more work than normal then its a leak, if the sensors bad it wont kick on and air up at all. (90 percent sure it wont be a sensor considering the circumstance..)
There is also the age of the air ride system to consider. Your ford is a 2001 you say. Those components are 13 years old and about due to fail anyhow. Thats when air ride gets to be a big pain in the butt and wallet. Im not knocking air suspensions, its just the reality of rubber components. Rubber eventually rots. You may want to consider a conversion kit to change it over to a coil over spring strut and ditch the air ride. A rear end kit will run around 150 to 200 bucks depending who makes the kit. (paying for the name in my opinion) It would be a lot less headache in the long run really.
