Motorola Elite Silver User Manual

I purchased the Motorola Silver Elite, which, stated on the box range can be up to 300 feet. How do I get the elite to a longer range. Also, How do I get the mic to pick up the sound for the listener better? Your kind and prompt response is greatly appreciated Charles E. Proctor 2
