Not Making Full Pot

not making 12 cups of coffee although 12 cups of water were poured into maker! What's up?

There are two reasons why you end up with less coffee than the amount of water you pour in to make coffee.

First, some of the water is lost to steam. Once water reaches 100C (212F), it turns to steam. Most coffee makers run very hot, so you will always lose some water to steam.

Secondly, a little water gets absorbed by the coffee grounds. Therefore, depending on how strong you make the coffee (how many grounds you put in the coffee maker), will impact how much water gets absorbed by the grounds (more grounds = more water absorbed).
