Having Trouble With My Nissan Altima 2006 2.5s

at times when i turn on my car and i put it on drive it stays neutral as if i had it on neutral. i hit the gas a little and it eventually just takes off. i am really concerned i just got the car. but like i said i put it on D and it does not go and acts like if its stuck.. can this be a gear sensor problem ...plez help
