International Flight

My son is basically stuck at the airport in Rome. The airlines told him he was not there in enough time to fly back to America, he had no baggage, and I do not understand why there was no flights until tomorrow. He has to sit in an airport all night with no money and food. Why would he be denied access to the plane, I mean he is American. And is he going to have trouble with that ticket tomorrow? What can he do?
