The United website states this: What identification does a child need for travel?

Children who are younger than 18 years of age and traveling within the United States are not required to have identification with them. However, if a child under age 18 is traveling internationally, he or she may need documentation, depending on the countries that will be visited.

he is a minor, so can travel with you, with no i.d. If you are going overseas, there is more involved. It wouldn't hurt to take a clear photocopy of his birth cetificate with you.
