Water Reservoir Connector

On removing the water reservoir I noticed a small white tube (about 2") drop onto the floor and a spring on a shelf at the back of the appliance. I assume the spring fits over the hole at the back of the compartmenrt and the white tube into that to push it against the back of the reservoir when it is put back in. Assuming this is correct, does anybody know which way round the tibe goes as there is a small hole on the long part of the tube itself and I don't want to risk a flood. Sorry for such a dumb question. Many thanks.
