Aa's Policy Re: Bereavement Fares

My husband and I recently traveled from NY to NC for the funeral of a family member. As we made the reservations on the spot, the tickets were quite costly. Do you have a policy re a discounted fare in said situation? If so, what documentation is needed? What is the procedure?
