Why Have I Suddenly Become Locked Out Of My Quickbooks

I was working on two different company books on my computer, and then tried to restore an updated data backup from another company & rec'd error msg that the backup was from a newer version (#9)& my version was #8. I am set for automatic updates so it had nothing new to download. Also error msg that it was a Read Only file, which it is not. Now I cannot access any of my books, even when not trying to restore.
