Two Flights Cancelled Reinbursment

I had two AA flights cancelled in one day. The first I received no reason and the second the flight was aborted during takeoff. AA counter rep stated I should get a hotel and send reciepts to AA however I can't find any information on how to do this. These cancellations were more difficult on my 81 yr old handicapped father-in-law requiring him to walk to gate since no wheelchairs were available and then all the additional walking in rain to hotel. Any help would be great on getting some compensation back for AA's mechanical problems.
