Is It Legal For The Airline To Arbitrarily Cancel A Seat

For 2 months I have a confirmed seat on a flight with American airlines. Yesterday checking for a detail of the flight I was told the isle seat was cancelled ! no reason given, no advise given. The only response I got - come earlier and fight it out at the airport !!!    Is American Airlines a third world country airline? I need the isle seat as I have to get regularly to the toilet. What can I do to force the airline to keep the reservation? Any legal action ? what authority can I contact in order to advise that rackless behaviour? I need a response ASAP as I intend to travel on Monday the 9th of May, 2011
