American Airlines offers a compassion fare for customers traveling due to a medical emergency or death of a family member not limited to immediate family of the passenger. Domestic partners are allowed.

This fare also applies to customers traveling due to a medical emergency within their family.

Customers must meet certain qualifications and provide specific information to obtain the compassion fare.

  • Travel must be entirely on American Airlines, American Eagle, and AmericanConnection within or between the United States, Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands (USVI) and the Caribbean including Bermuda, Transatlantic, Transpacific, Mexico, Central and South America regardless of origination point
  • Does not apply to AA Codeshare flights
  • Compassion/bereavement fares must be booked by AA only.  Agency created PNRs will be canceled then rebooked by AA in a new PNR.
  • Tickets may be issued by travel agents. Tickets must be completed within one day after the reservation is completed.
  • Changes to reservations must be made by AA, however, travel agents may reissue the ticket.
  • Travel must commence within 7 days of booking, unless stated otherwise in the Rule Display
  • Must be round trip

Relatives or friends who wish to travel and state their reason for travel is a U.S. soldier who is deceased, injured, missing in action, or a prisoner of war, will be allowed to travel using our Compassion fares. This applies for both domestic and international travel. Travel can be to join the soldier or a family member.

As a reminder, AA compassion/bereavement fares must be booked by AA only. Tickets may be issued by travel agents. Agencies that make or change the reservations for these fares in their GDS are subject to a debit memo.

Contact AA reservations for full details and for reservations.
