That's a good question. Fares are based on factors such as: availability (number of unsold seats on a given flight); competition for a market (how many airlines service the route and the overall number of seats for sale within that market); low-cost carriers that offer service between the cities you're traveling which helps drive fares down on all airlines; when you travel, such as peak or low travel seasons, holidays, etc.

Airlines base fares on many factors, but generally popular or large city markets offer more competitive (lower) fares than travel between cities with only a few airline choices. Other variables such as the date, day of week and time of day impact fares as well.
