Lost Or Stolen?

When Iarrived at my travel destination (Dominican Republic) a piece of jewelry was missing from its box in my checked luggage. How do i address this? To whom should I speak? The jewelry was expensive and of high sentimemtal value.

This is what they have on their website and it seems like they are not much help:

Each airport has its own method for processing lost and found requests. If you left an item at the airport or on your flight, please contact the Lost and Found office of the airport from or to which you were traveling. For your convenience, airport hours of operation are accessible from our Airport Information and Ticket Counter Hours page.
