Checking In One Flight At A Time

I have a flight to New Delhi that connects in London where I will pick up a friend and he will travel with me from London to New Delhi.  I arrive at 10:50 pm.  I will be going to a hotel for the night as my next flight does not leave until 8:45 the next morning.  When I check in at Ohare I would like to only check in for the first leg of the flght to London.  I want to get my bag off in London.  the next morning I want to check in for the London to New Delhi leg with my friend so we can get seats together.  Is this possible?
