Grinding Noise And Feed Dogs Won't Raise

I receieved a Brother CS6000i as a gift and cannot get the feed dogs to raise. I have toggled the feed dog switch at the back of the machine and began to sew, but they never raise to move fabric through the machine. There is also a grinding noise with each stictch, and it appears as though the needle rubs against the bobbin compartment with each rotation. The needle has been replaced and is not bent.
