Children who will be traveling internationally must have all appropriate international travel documentation. Please refer to this page at United (Continental) Airlines for specifics.

International Travel Document Requirements.  Please read the linked page which will open in a new window.  On that page you will read:

U.S. law requires all customers, regardless of citizenship, age or destination, to hold a secure document to depart the United States by air (one-way or roundtrip itinerary).

A secure document is a passport, U.S. permanent resident card, Refugee or Stateless travel document, Re-Entry Permit, NEXUS card, U.S Merchant Mariner Card, military ID and emergency travel document issued by an embassy or consulate.

Please refer to the linked page for more information.

Children under the age of 18 traveling with an adult, to any of the 50 United States, are not required to show ID at check-in. However, when traveling with a lap child, the adult may be required to provide proof of age.

Do not overlook Medical Permission forms and the like because these might also be necessary although certainly not an airline requirement.
