How Can We Get Reimbursed For Extra Fees To Fly On Another Airline?

My husbands flight was cancelled and was given the option to fly with another airline at an extra cost. He was also given the option of waiting for a flight the next day. Continental did not offer to pay for a hotel or a taxi to return the next day and was told that continental will not reimburse for any extra fees????
