The only way around something like this is through a subpeona ordering all account activity by the one who placed the ad to be presented in a court of law. However, once again, there is not much to use for going to court.
Although, it is doubtful Craigslist can, or will, assist with your request, you may try to contact them and explain what happened. They may have an alternative answer for you. You may use this link Submit a Request, fill in the form and click submit.
There is no guarantee you will recieve an answer you want. However I wish you luck in getting this person flagged for misrepresentation.

I'm hoping you've stopped payment and are not out the $1000. If not, it's a matter for the police. It's unlikely Craigslist will give you information about its advertisers.
