Apps And Games. I Lose My Game If I Need To Check A Text Message.

Is there a way to pause a game in order to check a text message (or anything else besides something in the game) and still come back to it? I can pause the game but then the only way I know of to get out of the game to check something like a text is to hit the home button, when I go back to the game via the icon on my home screen the game I had paused is gone and the whole thing reloads from the beginning.
