Digital Splitting

i activated a new Direct tv HD box and card, when running the cable directly to the new box all downloads went fine and I had service (could see all chanels). my main DVR is in other room and I used a digital splitter to add the 2nd tv. when i plugged the splitter back in....cant get signal on the 2nd tv but main dvr in living room is fine. dont understand, this line is also on the splitter and it works.
