I Can't Get Me Dvd Drive To Recognise Discs

The DVD drive on my Dell Inspiron 1750 does not seem to recognise either blank discs or pre-recorded discs. The driver seems to be damaged and I don't seem to be able to find a driver online. I would reinstall the original disc but as the drive isn't working, that's impossible. Any suggestions?
