Is There A Charge To Check 1 Bag

when I booked flight I read that I was allowed 1 bag to check as long as it was under 58 lbs. a friend travelled on delta to Washington and said he had to pay $25 to check the luggage.

Yes, Delta charges for the first checked bag for almost every flight. Here is a link to their page concerninig checked baggage fees:

Of note:

On flights within the United States and flights to and from Canada, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico, you will be charged the following fees for the first and second checked bag (each way, for round trip):

if checking in online at delta.com

$23 USD/CAD* for the first checked bag

$32 USD/CAD* for the second checked bag

if checking in via ticket counter, kiosk, or curbside at the airport

$25 USD/CAD* for the first checked bag

$35 USD/CAD* for the second checked bag

Southwest Airlines is the only one I know of as of August 2010 that does not charge for 1 bag. Most folks are using carry-ons and I hear that those will even have a charge attached before long. Best Wishes
