Using External Hd With Dvr

I have been dish customer 12 years and am happy with it. I now have a DVR and 2 of the Western Digital "My Book AV" external hard drives and they are working.  I have contacted WD however about an issue with them and they say that as of yet, they don't have any trouleshooting data for use with DVR's.  I suggested that they do so because Dish touts their product.  The minor issue I have is that when I activate the external DVR, about 50% of the time, the DVR recognizes it within 15 seconds.  The other 50% of the time, the DVR does not recognize the external HD until I reboot the device, sometimes more than once.  On the adviced of WD, I keep the external HD powered down except when I am using it.  Do you have any additional tips on how to enhance the recognition process when I activate the external HD?/Thanks/Ron
