People 'friending' Me When I Havent Sent Requests

I am concerned that I clicked on a cover photo of someone to see if I knew them and it sent a friend request to that person. I didn't want to friend the person...and others have accepted friendship and i know I have never been on their page nor have I requested their friendship. Is there a way to check my settings to stop this? I have gone through everyothing on FB with no luck?
