Friends Being Deleted From My List

I thought i would update my profile by adding my maiden name however when i did this it deleted alot of info from my profile along with some friends. I thought if I would change it back to the way i had it that it would fix the issue. Well it didn't and now whenever i send the deleted friends a request they will confirm but it does not stay in my profile. What the heck? I'm at my whits end here!
