You should be able to flag most images as inappropriate. As for ads they are harder to remove. The best way is by using browser filtering. I recommend Firefox instead of Internet Explorer. There are tons of add-ons to Firefox for blocking ads. On of my favorites is "no-script". This add-on blocks so many things that it frequently breaks web pages. Its very configurable and you can tuen on each element of a page on a site by site basis. Very powerful and very free to use.
Facebook has a pretty good privacy guide that explains what they have in place for these issues. Try giving it a read, it m ay help. https://www.facebook.com/safety/attachment/Guide%20to%20Facebook%20Security.pdf
