Status Not Appearing On Home Page

When I update my status, it does not appear on the front page (HOME) for all to see, instead it only shows in my profile. A side note, is that there is a curious lock symbol that appears by my status and I think maybe that is the problem. Can you please advise on how to move forward. Thanks so much.
