Facebook Profile Page To Facebook Fan Page

I started a Facebook profile page for our non-profit music organization years ago before I really knew of fan pages. We reached the 5,000 friend amount, so I looked into a fan page. I created something from the profile page but don't remember now how I got to it since it was a while ago. Anyway, when I log into Facebook I would be in the profile page but if I went to the Home page there would be the fan page listed on the left side under my information - and that was how I got to my fan page. I am now trying to put both pages together and get rid of the profile page because I have over 1,000 friend requests that we cannot accept because we have 5,000 friends already. We have 8,800 fans and I'm sure that most of our friends are also fans. This morning I went to the help screen and typed in "how do I convert my profile into a Facebook page" and followed the instructions - now I see two pages for us - the fan page I originally set up and now a "new" page from my profile page. I want to get rid of the "new" page and just use the page we had been using with 8,800 fans but can't figure out what I need to do - can someone please help me so I don't have to update 2 pages with every post???
