Opening An Account With Facebook.com
why can't i open a Facebook account with a breakthru.com e-mail
it tells me to enter a valid e-mail address

If that's your email address, it should be acceptable. You can protest to Facebook using this Facebook page.
You may also write or phone Facebook, but whether they'll respond to your concerns is another matter. Here's the contact information:
