I noticed that you have a 1991 model. Around the '90's is when the automotive industry started putting in all these sensors that were supposed to make things so much better. The only thing better I see is having to take it to a shop so you can put it on a meter for the check engine light because nobody can afford a thousand dollar diagnosic meter unless they use it every day for a living. I am assuming you checked the fluid level and it probably wouldn't be shifting into second hard if the fluid was low anyway.You also mention the rpm at 1500 I think. Are you saying you have control of the gas and are watching the tach or are you saying the truck goes up in rpm on it's own. Also does check engine light stay on all the time or only when you have this problem and is this a constant problem where you can never get above second gear? If the check engine light was already on before I would start by checking the linkage. You may not be actually be getting it all the way in drive. If the transmission does this all the time then I say check linkage then go to transmission check for burnt fluid or bad filter. If this is occassional problem with it only happening with engine light coming on when shift problem happens then I would definitely go to have it put on a diagnostic meter to find out which sensor is bad. I am only telling you the order I would check into it with the information I had. I really need detailed information for a better answer because it is very hard to tell someone what is wrong with their vehicle from a description instead of being there in person where I could see all that is happening for myself first hand.
