Camshaft Position Sensor Location On A 2000 Ford Explorer Xls 4.0 Ei V6 Sohc.

It is at the rear of engine, a little toward the passenger side. It is in the flat area of the rear block deck.
Follow the wiring harness back there and that may help you find it.

That previous answer is for the ohv engine! For the sohc, the cam sensor is mounted on the front end of the driver side valve cover. Be aware that 9 out of 10 times, the crank sensor is the culprit that causes a cam sensor code on the sohc.
