This is the best option if you don't have access to your server. Webmaster Tools provides the meta tag in XHTML syntax, but you can change it to HTML; either way will work.
- On the Webmaster Tools Home page, click Verify this site next to the site you want.
- In the Verification method list, select Meta tag, and follow the steps on your screen.
Once you've added the tag to your home page, click Verify.
We'll verify that the meta tag exists in the correct location. If we can't find the tag, we'll give you information about the error we encountered. More information about meta tag verification errors. Once this problem is resolved, try to verify your site again. Don't delete the tag from the page, as this will cause your site to become unverified.
