Password Recovery Link Gone To De-activated Account.

I forgot my password with hotmail and when I went to change and recover it the recovery link went to an old hotmail account I had to close down and de-activate . Now hotmail are saying Im not the owner after submitting as much details I possibly can about the account. Its for my work and it was created 10yrs ago. Im desperate to get it sorted. I cant believe that this is happening. Hotmail should know that the address does not exist anymore into which they sent the recovery link.
