First of all, to be sure that you don't lose any books, you can back them up to your PC using the USB cable that came with it. That way, you will have a copy of the books outside of being able to re-download the books from Amazon.
Then you can deregister your Kindle and delete the books from it.
To deregister your Kindle, login into your Amazon Kindle account (on your PC) and do the following:
- Locate the Kindle Name in the list of Your Kindle(s).
- Click the "Deregister" link to the right of the name and e-mail address.
- Verify action by clicking the Deregister button in the pop-up window.
If you have a First generation Kindle, on the Kindle itself, you can do this:
- Move the wireless switch on the back of your Kindle (1st Generation) to the "ON" position.
- Press the Home key to make sure you are on the Home screen.
- Scroll to Menu and press the select wheel.
- Select "Settings" from the menu.
- Scroll to the Account Name section and select "Deregister."
- Select "OK" from the confirmation screen or select "Cancel" if you wish to abort the process.
- Wait for Kindle (1st Generation) to process the request. The account name will be blank and the Register option will appear when deregistration is successful.
Likewise, the current Kindle you do this:
- If you are not already on the Home screen, press the "Home" button.
- Press the "Menu" button. Make sure that Whispernet is turned on.
- Move the 5-way down until "Settings" is underlined and press to select.
- Press the 5-way to select "register" or "deregister" from the Settings screen.
- If you're registering Kindle, enter your Amazon.com user name and password (the e-mail address and password associated with your Amazon account) using the keyboard.
- Navigate the 5-way to select "OK" to finish the process or "Cancel" to abort.
You can then set up a new account on the devices, but you just might want to let the person you're giving it to do that.
However, if you want to share books with that person, you can have up to 6 Kindles per account and you wouldn't have to deregister it.
