Does Motor Have A Safety Device To Keep From Damaging Motor?

door was left open for about 8 hours. now nothing gets cold or freezes. does the motor when it doesnt shut off for a while does it trip itself to keep from burning up? like a reset button or did it stay running  and burn motor up? thank you
