Leap Pad 2 Power Will Not Charge

I just bought the Leap Pad 2 Power for my grandson. It worked great until the batteries died. Tried plugging it in and left it for hours and it will not stay on. Battery is too low. Will not even stay on while it is plugged in. It has the rechargeable batteries but they won't recharge.
