Light Won't Come On Whole Charging Leappad

My daughters leap pad2 is only 5 months old, I have rechargeable batteries in it and when I out it on the charger, the light won't come on Not will the device turn on whole on charger like it should. If I anyone has any advice that would be greatly appreciated.
