One, congestion on the Internet: If you are on shared access medium such as cable modem, satellite, or wireless, there may be other people online who are sharing your up-link. The more online at once the slower things get.
Two, you might have corruption or a virus: Make sure your anti-virus program is up to date. If you don't have one, get one. I recommend Avast! which is free for home use. You can get it at http://www.avast.com. Registration is required but it is free.
If you have corruption it could be as bad as requiring Windows to be reinstalled. A quick check can be done by opening a command prompt by clicking Start->Run, enter CMD, click OK. A DOS command window will open. In it type "SFC /scannow". You might be prompted for your Windows CD. This will scan your files and tell you if any hjave changed from what came on the original CD.
