How Can I Keep The Recirc Switch From Turning Off Every Few Minutes?

I have horrendous allergy issues and need to have my air conditioner running on the Max or Recirc setting all the time.  Unfortunately, the 2004 Mercury Monterey that I have seems to think that the Max/Recirc setting is a very temporary thing because it will turn it off after anywhere from 2 or 3 minutes to 20 minutes . . . but it will NOT let it stay on.  I have never before encountered this with any of the automobiles I have owned, whether foreign or domestic (including3 other Ford products). Does anyone know of a fix for this?
